Location  - Jordan.

Description - The earliest tombs and temples, sculptured from the rock date about 300 BC. A vast and prosperous city flourished here in the 1st century AD under the Nabataens, of Arabic origin. At its peak, the city had the capacity to have housed over 20,000 people.

The city survived the conquest of the Romans in 106 AD, but after the rise of the Muslims in 7th Century AD, nothing was known about Petra until 1812, when an Anglo-Swiss explorer, Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, tricked his way to the then ‘hidden city’. (12)
