- Barbrook
(Stone Circle)
Location:
Derbyshire, 6 miles NE of Bakewell.
Description: This circle has its stones set in a rubble bank with one or two entrances through it. At least one stone is missing and it is thought that there were originally 12. Around these stones and just touching them, the builders piled a rubble-bank whose inner edges they lined with little dry-stone wall. There are possible cup-marks on the flat-topped stone at the south. About 300 metres north is a similar embanked ring (Barbrook II), which also had a bank with inner dry-stone walling against which nine rough stones had been propped and wedged into place. The outer edge of the bank was supported by kerbstones of millstone grit. A recent excavation revealed a cairn in the southern part of the circle. One of its kerbs had a cup-mark on it. Also, towards the central space, a cist was found whose capstone had several cup-marks on it. Finds from Barbrook II are at Sheffield Museum.
